Steel Lintels in UAE: Types, Bearing, Corrosion Protection and Specification Guide

A technical guide for contractors, consultants and procurement teams specifying steel lintels above masonry openings in UAE construction projects.

Steel lintels are small structural components with a critical job: carrying masonry and other design loads across door, window and service openings. A lintel that is too flexible can crack finishes; inadequate bearing can overstress masonry; and unsuitable corrosion protection can create concealed long-term problems.

Ruwais Steel supplies steel lintels including single-wall, double-wall, cavity-wall, arch and curved configurations for UAE projects.

What Does a Steel Lintel Do?

An opening interrupts the normal load path through a wall. The lintel bridges the opening and transfers load to the supports at each side.

It can carry masonry self-weight and other loads defined by the structural design. It should therefore be treated as a structural component, not simply as a steel angle placed above an opening.

Main Types of Steel Lintels

Single-Wall Lintels

Used for a defined single wall leaf or wall build-up. Profile and width should match the masonry and bearing detail.

Double-Wall Lintels

Ruwais Steel's range includes double-wall arrangements formed from combined lintel units where greater support is required.

Cavity-Wall Lintels

Designed around separate wall leaves and a cavity. They must coordinate with insulation, water management and support to each leaf.

Arch and Curved Lintels

Fabricated to follow architectural geometry while providing the support defined by the structural engineer.

Steel Lintel vs Stock Steel Angle

Factor Purpose-Designed Lintel Generic Angle
Wall integration Designed for wall build-up Limited by standard geometry
Cavity detailing Can integrate cavity requirements Needs separate detail
Capacity Specified for lintel use Must be calculated
Corrosion Integrated into specification Requires separate detailing

A stock steel angle should not replace a designed lintel without checking capacity, torsion, bearing and wall geometry.

1. Opening Width Is Only the Starting Dimension

The total lintel length exceeds the clear opening because bearing is required at both ends.

Required bearing depends on reactions, masonry strength and the engineered detail. Do not apply a universal site rule unless it is supported by the approved design.

2. Bearing Transfers Load Into Masonry

Lintel reactions are delivered through relatively small bearing areas. Supporting masonry must be able to receive those reactions.

The engineer may specify reinforced blocks, padstones or concrete where reactions are high. Bearing surfaces should be level and sound.

3. Loading Above Openings Can Be Complex

Actual load distribution depends on wall geometry, masonry, openings above, floors, roofs and movement joints.

Simplified triangular-load rules should not replace the structural design.

4. Deflection Matters

A lintel can remain structurally safe yet deflect enough to crack brittle masonry or finishes.

Serviceability therefore matters. Longer spans become increasingly sensitive to stiffness, and increasing profile depth can sometimes be more effective than simply adding thickness.

5. Eccentric Loading Can Cause Torsion

Open steel sections can twist when loads do not pass through the appropriate structural centre.

The lintel profile and restraint should reflect the actual wall build-up and supported leaf positions.

6. Cavity Walls Need Water and Insulation Coordination

  • Cavity width.
  • Inner and outer leaf thickness.
  • Insulation continuity.
  • Cavity tray or damp-proof detailing.
  • Drainage and weep strategy.
  • Thermal bridging.
  • Corrosion protection.

7. Corrosion Protection

Lintels can become inaccessible after construction. Hot-dip galvanizing after fabrication is one protection option.

ISO 1461:2022 covers galvanized coatings on fabricated iron and steel articles. ISO 12944-2 provides a framework for classifying atmospheric environments for paint-system selection.

8. Fire Performance Follows the Wall System

Required fire resistance depends on the complete wall and opening detail. A rating should not be assumed merely because steel is surrounded by masonry or concrete.

The fire engineer and approved wall system should define the required protection.

9. Fabrication Accuracy Matters

Shop drawings should define length, profile, thickness, welds, holes, end details and finish.

Curved lintels should use coordinated architectural geometry rather than an unverified site sketch.

10. Installation Checklist

  • Confirm opening and bearing dimensions.
  • Check piece mark and orientation.
  • Provide level bearing surfaces.
  • Maintain cavity and insulation details.
  • Do not notch structural parts without approval.
  • Repair damaged coatings using the approved system.

Common Steel Lintel Mistakes

  • Ordering only by opening width: the required bearing length and wall detail must also be considered.
  • Using one lintel for different wall thicknesses: the profile should suit the actual wall build-up.
  • Replacing a designed lintel with a stock angle: capacity, torsion and bearing must be checked before substitution.
  • Cutting galvanized lintels without approved repair: damaged coating should be repaired using the specified system.
  • Ignoring cavity water management: lintel detailing should coordinate with cavity trays, drainage and insulation.
  • Incorrect orientation: the lintel must be installed in the position shown on the approved detail.
  • Supporting on damaged masonry: bearing surfaces must be suitable for the design reaction.

Frequently Asked Questions About Steel Lintels

How long should a steel lintel be?

Total length is the clear opening plus the engineered bearing at both ends. Bearing should follow the approved detail.

Can a steel angle be used as a lintel?

Only where it is structurally designed for the actual wall, span, loading and corrosion condition.

Are galvanized lintels suitable for UAE projects?

Galvanizing can provide durable protection, but suitability depends on exposure, coating specification and detailing.
